This article will take you through the initial steps of writing your own API for the StarCraft II client. This is not required at all, community APIs exist in most popular language. However, the article provides some insights into how a basic SC2 API wrapper works.

The client exposes a request-response style API that accepts protobuf messages. I wrote an article on the subject of protobuf for readers unfamiliar with the format, but it is essentially just a binary to syntax = 'proto3'.

These changes upgrades the proto schema to proto3 which allows us to compile it using protoc into C#, Dart or Go. An example of the resulting compiled files can be seen in my repository for NydusNetwork, a C# StarCraft II API.

Up until quite recently, StarCraft: Brood War was the most hyped esports game out there, with matches being televised and distributed on cable in the same manner as professional football or tennis matches.StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty manages to continue this legacy with balance changes that will allow anyone to have equal shots in matches (no more blitz zerg rushes).Besides, the way certain units interact, and the rock-paper-scissors type of fashion one unit can be countered by another allows almost every match to feel different from the previous one.
